Georgie's temperature dropped to 99.6 on Thursday around suppertime. She was up all night long nesting and pacing the floor. I was sure she would begin to whelp in the middle of the night, but then they did not come until 4:28am on Friday morning. The last and largest boy was born at 10:50pm on Friday night. We were exhausted yet too excited to sleep very well and there was much cleaning and helping her with her first litter.
Sometimes it comes naturally, and sometimes it doesn't. The trust built between my females and I during this time is most precious. They look to you for approval, they question what they are doing, the puppy noises can make them nervous, but being by their side and letting them know that everything is going well, they have done a good job, and teaching them to relax while mothering forms an unbreakable bond.
It's hard work, but it is my honor to bring beautiful new life into this world for the simple pleasure that our wonderful pets bring us day by day.
These babies are my heart and soul. I hope that they can hold a special place in your heart as well. ENJOY!
